Asbestos is a set of naturally occurring silicate minerals.  There are six total and they all have long thin fibrous crystals.  Because of their unique and useful properties they have long been manufactured for commercial purposes.  It is the inhalation of these fibers, however, that can cause serious illness. 

            For its abilities to resist heat and fire, act as a noise buffer and because it is a poor conductor, asbestos has been used extensively as an insulator.  The list of uses for asbestos insulation is a long one.  It has been used for electrical insulation, building insulation, hot water heating systems and more.  What is more, this insulation has been used in industrial buildings, homes, municipal buildings- including schools and hospitals, cars, boats, ships, electrical wiring,  space shuttles and appliances- things like toaster and hair dryers.

            Asbestos insulation was supplied in many different forms.  Let's take a look at some of the more common types and what they are used for. 

 

The first is an insulating mix with asbestos.  This type of insulating was used on pipes and other construction products for temperature protection.

 

Insulation coating containing asbestos was used between 1930 and 1970.  This coating was applied to maintain temperatures on a variety of systems.

 

Insulation ducts with asbestos were used in ceilings and floors of houses and commercial buildings.  The asbestos was usually on the outer surface of ducts so it did not affect the air being circulated by the ducts.

 

Insulation jacketing with asbestos was used as a sealant.  Duct work in manufacturing plants that are exposed to high temperatures found insulation jacketing to keep temperatures stable.

 

Seeing as asbestos by nature is resistant to heat and other extremes it was used to seal and insulate pipes, duct work and areas subjected to harsh climates.  Asbestos was often used in insulation sealant to protect the pipes or ducts it was applied to.

 

Calcium silicate insulation with asbestos was used in pipe lagging in walls and ceilings.  The asbestos was added to the calcium silicate to add sturdiness and fire resistance.

 

            The versatility of asbestos and its valuable properties is what made it useful commercially.  Despite its benefits, it is toxic.  Australia introduced a complete ban on asbestos in 1991.  Removal of existing asbestos, including asbestos insulation has been ongoing the last few years.  If one owns or lives in an older home or has commercial properties it is a good idea to read up on asbestos.  Learning to identify asbestos insulation and how to properly remove it, can be the first step to ensuring a safer environment for your-self and loved ones.
